The charming town of Pietra is located at the slope of Mount Trabocchetto and its place-name derives from the castle “La Pietra” (The Rock) that was built to protect the Val Maremola. Its ancient origins date back to 3rd century settlements. Throughout the years it was always subject to various dominations from Arduino in 950 to Bocheri, Carretto, and finally to the Bishops of Albenga. In 1385 Pope Urbano VI gave Pietra to Republic of Genoa and from here it went through various historical stages. Today, it is divided between the new and old part of town. The newer part is located along the beach and in the older part you can admire the traces of its past. One must visit the Parish Church of St. Nicola built during the second half of the 18th century. You should also visit the Castle “La Pietra” built in the 7th-8th centuries and for a long time the Bishops of Albenga lived here. In 1100 it became there summer home as well as the 12th century Palazzo dei Conti Leale Franchelli.
