Marine protected Area of Cinque Terre
Scuba diving vacation in Liguria: With the name Cinque Terre we mean the 15 km stretch of overhanging coast along the litoral of the eastern part of Liguria. The name Cinque Terre (five lands) comes from the sea villages: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The reserve, rich in animal and vegetal species, has been established to preserve biodiversity and habitats along the coast, by imposing rules about the uses and the activities carried out: here overhanging cliffs, bays, small beaches, caves, and ravines among the crags alternate. It has become part of UNESCO world, cultural and natural heritage. The sea bottoms are considered among the most varied and rich in marine fauna of Liguria. In a relatively limited surface of the sea-bottom like that of the Cinque Terre, there are a number of different species, some of them not so frequent in the Mediterranean Sea, each of them represented by a great number of specimens. The rocky coastal sea bottom, which characterizes almost the whole Protected Area except the beaches of Monterosso and Corniglia, favours the settlement of many seaweed species.
