Scuba diving vacation in Liguria: The Marine Protected Area develops around the Promontory of Portofino and is divided into the three areas A, B, and C. The extraordinary beauty of this underwater landscape represents one of the main attractions for the thousands of divers diving every year in these waters. It is the realm of the red coral which, on the promontory`s seabed, develops with very rich populations, which are very rare in other parts of the Ligurian Sea. From 20 to more than 50 meters of depth, thanks to the continuous building action of the coral algae and of calcareous skeleton animals, a very complex environment dominated by big horny corals, sponges, Madreporaria, and Bryozoa formed. On the sandy seabed, along the western and eastern slopes of the promontory there are the Posidonia beds, a sea plant that has a great ecological importance in the Mediterranean area, since it plays an active role in the consolidation process of the seabed, in the defence of the coast, and by housing a very rich fauna.
