A significant resource is the town fortification system over 12 kilometres curling on the XVII century walls, from the Lanterna to Carignano along the mount Peralto ridge, thus surrounding the town. The hills behind the walls having escaped the urban sprawl, a green route soon to be equipped as urban park is now available above the town, with a fine view on the harbour. Quite near above the town centre is the Parco Urbano delle Mura, extending over 850 hectares of territory behind the town. These huge works were further reinforced in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by the addition of powerful fortresses. The Genoese, then the French and again the Piedmontese built or completed the fortresses such as the Tenaglia, Crocetta, Begato, Castellaccio, Sperone, Puin, Diamante, Fratello Minore and Fratello Maggiore. Forte Sperone The earlier data about a Ghibelline building on the top of mount Peralto date back to 1319, but the actual fortress was built in 1700: an outstandingly resistant three-storied fortress, including officer lodgings, warehouses, a powder magazine and other rooms. The charming interiors as well as the courts often host artistic performances. Forte Diamante Quite picturesque, it dates back to 1758 and is located at about 667 metres above sea level. It dominates over the Valle del Polcevera and the Val Bisagno. This was the first Genoese fortress to be completed, as a stronghold against invasions from the North. The fortress was surrounded by two star-shaped bulwarks. Forte Puin Built in 1828 by the Savoy Engineer Corps, this very well preserved fortress is located in a beautiful spot and dominates the whole Parco delle Mura. Recently restored it is a favourite destination of excursions, didactic, recreational and naturalistic itineraries, guided visits and naturalistic exhibitions. Also used for fire sighting. Forte Begato Rebuilt between 1819 and 1823 by the Savoy House, the fortress could quarter 840 in the barracks and hold 41,000 of ammunition in the powder magazine. Currently under restoration, it will be available as a citadel with indoor multipurpose areas and outdoor areas, an outdoor theatre and museum areas. All year roundGenoa
